In Your Scientific Publications

In each publication or other document describing your NIH-funded research, please include an acknowledgment of the agency’s support and a disclaimer such as:

"Research reported in this publication was supported by the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases of the National Institutes of Health under Award Number ________. The content is solely the responsibility of the authors and does not necessarily represent the official views of the National Institutes of Health."

If you have more than one NIAMS award, or additional NIH funding, please cite only the grant(s) that supported the research described in the publication.

In Your Oral and Poster Scientific Presentations

At scientific conferences and meetings on basic, translational and clinical research, help promote awareness of the federal funding you receive through the NIH. Please include this funding acknowledgment slide, designed for both PC and Macintosh formats, in your oral and poster presentations.

When Publicizing Your Research

Please alert the NIAMS Office of Science Policy, Planning and Communications (OSPPC) when your manuscript is accepted for publication. This allows NIAMS staff to explore potential publicity opportunities with you and your institution and helps the public understand the link between NIH funding and health advances.

Please remember that grantee institution press releases, videos, publications, interviews with reporters or other communications must include acknowledgment of NIH support. We are happy to work with you and your press office to ensure the appropriate language is included.

Reporting Preprints and Other Interim Research Products

Last month, the NIH shared new guidance regarding the use of interim research products, such as preprints and preregistered protocols. The agency encourages investigators to use these products to speed information dissemination and enhance the rigor of their work. As with other research products, please remember to acknowledge NIAMS/NIH support.

NIH Public Access Policy

Lastly, please review the NIH Public Access Policy. The policy requires scientists to submit final, peer-reviewed journal manuscripts that result from NIH funds to the digital archive PubMed Central® at the time of acceptance for publication. The policy requires that the public be able to access the papers in PubMed Central no later than 12 months after publication.
