After obtaining a B.S. in Chemistry from SUNY Stony Brook, Dr. Winkler completed his Ph.D. at the University of Maryland, College Park, with thesis work on energy-loss spectroscopy. He subsequently undertook additional research on electron microscopy and energy-loss spectroscopy at NIST and Lehigh University. After working at the University of Maryland, College Park, he came to NIAMS as an instrumentation specialist and is now a staff scientist.

Research Statement

Dr. Winkler’s main area of expertise is cryo-electron tomography, creating three-dimensional reconstructions to study viral and macromolecular structure. He also supports and advances EM lab operations in a variety of ways. In particular, he trains EM users, maintains and tests the electron microscopes and cameras, designs and modifies scientific instrumentation, and is responsible for many of the administrative needs associated with the EM lab.
