Summary

Keiko Sakamoto, M.D., Ph.D., is a board-certified Dermatologist (Japanese Association of Dermatology) and Stephen I. Katz Scholar in the Cutaneous Leukocyte Biology Section at the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases.

Dr. Sakamoto obtained her M.D. from Kagawa University Faculty of Medicine and Ph.D. from Hamamatsu University School of Medicine. She was a visiting fellow in the Nagao lab, Dermatology Branch, NIAMS, NIH from 2018 to 2021. After serving as faculty in the Department of Dermatology at Hamamatsu University School of Medicine, she returned to the NIH in 2023.

Research Statement

Dr. Sakamoto explores mechanisms that underlie cell-cell communication in the skin during homeostasis and disease. In 2021, she demonstrated that the Notch-ADAM10 signaling axis in the interferon-responsive hair follicles were required for regulating follicular microbiome, the disruption of which led to follicular dysbiosis and innate lymphoid cell-mediated destruction of the hair follicles (Sakamoto et al., Immunity 2021), modeling a form of scarring alopecia. Upon her return, she continues to study immune cell-tissue crosstalk in the context of basic skin immunology and human primary immunodeficiencies.
