Summary

Ecem Sevim, M.D. received her medical degree from Istanbul University, Cerrahpasa School of Medicine, in 2012. After three years of internal medicine residency experience in Istanbul, Turkey, Dr. Sevim moved to New York in 2017 to work as a research fellow at the Hospital for Special Surgery, NY. She spent a further two years there gaining extensive experience both in clinical and translational research. Dr. Sevim completed her internal medicine residency training at Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore Medical Center – Wakefield Campus and subsequently joined the NIAMS family for her clinical rheumatology fellowship.

Dr. Sevim has several publications in peer-reviewed journals. She has given numerous oral and poster presentations at venues such as the American College of Rheumatology and the International Congress of Internal Medicine.

Besides her engagement with rheumatology and research, her interests and hobbies include abstract art, jazz, snowboarding, yoga, and traveling.

Research Statement

Dr. Sevim is interested in studying antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL) and related clinical manifestations. Her primary focus is the pathogenesis of microvascular thrombosis related to autoimmune/autoinflammatory status.

She previously worked as a research fellow for the international consortium AntiPhospholipid Syndrome Alliance for Clinical Trials and InternatiOnal Networking (APS ACTION). She participated in the development of a flow cytometry-based assay for mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) activation in peripheral blood. She also investigated cell signaling pathways in autoimmune diseases, specifically the role of mTOR pathway activation in the skin biopsies of aPL-positive patients with livedo.

Dr. Sevim currently works in the Laboratory of Vascular Thrombosis and Inflammation, led by Dr. Yogen Kanthi, focusing on identifying the molecular and cellular processes in antiphospholipid antibody-positive patients that lead to disease manifestations in the view of thrombo-inflammation.
