Summary

Jin Kyun Park, M.D., Ph.D., received his medical degree from Heidelberg University in Germany. He pursued a two-year postdoctoral study in Immunology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, and then Emory University in Atlanta, GA, focusing on the role of T cell senescence in acute coronary syndrome. After completing his internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Florida and a clinical fellowship in rheumatology at Johns Hopkins University, he joined the faculty in the Division of Rheumatology at Seoul National University, Korea.

He joined the Vasculitis Translational Research Program at NIAMS under Dr. Peter Grayson as a special volunteer to study the immunopathogenesis of large vessel vasculitis.

His current research focuses on understanding the link between cancer, infection, and rheumatic diseases. He has developed an interest in inflammatory and non-inflammatory vasculopathy associated with rheumatic connective tissue diseases. In addition, he is actively involved in numerous clinical studies in rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and myositis.

In the last few years, he has contributed to several landmark vaccination trials in patients with rheumatic diseases. The findings helped inform in the current vaccination guidelines.

Research Statement

Dr. Park is actively researching the role of interleukin-6 receptor polymorphism in the pathogenesis and treatment response of giant cell arteritis. Additionally, he conducts studies on the contribution of individual immune cells to vasculitis within a spatial context, employing spatial transcriptome analysis.

Furthermore, he focuses on ongoing investigations into vaccine response among patients with rheumatic diseases with a particular emphasis on understanding how immunosuppressants may impact vaccine effectiveness.
