Summary

Kaavya graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology in May 2022 with a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience and minors in psychology, health, and medical sciences. Her research background is in neuroscience and biomedical engineering. At Georgia Tech, she worked in the Pardue Lab to investigate blast injuries to the brain based on varying helmet configurations used in combat. Additionally, she evaluated signs of Alzheimer’s through the visual system to enable earlier detection and treatment. At the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, Kaavya worked with Dr. Prasanna Vibhute to develop a novel method to biopsy a petrous apex lesion in the brain. Through her experiences as a medical assistant intern at Good Samaritan Health Center and volunteering with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta throughout college, Kaavya has grown in her dedication to becoming a physician.

Research Statement

Kaavya is working with Dr. Pravitt Gourh at the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases to investigate scleroderma, a rare autoimmune disease prevalent among African Americans. She aims to understand disease-associated genetic variants using techniques such as RNA-seq. As part of the Health Disparities Unit, the Gourh Lab works to understand scleroderma in a larger context by evaluating environmental and sociological triggers that lead to pathology.
