Summary

Dr. Stephanie Burrows is the Chief of the NIAMS Scientific Planning, Policy, and Analysis Branch (SPPAB), a role that she has held since August 2022. As Branch Chief, she oversees SPPAB's efforts to coordinate the development of the NIAMS Strategic Plan; facilitate the Institute's interactions with members of Congress and their staff; and develop a range of policy and programmatic reports and presentations. Dr. Burrows joined NIAMS in 2013 as a Science Policy Analyst in the Office of Science Policy, Planning, and Communications. In that role, she served as the primary Science Policy Analyst for research and training activities related to skin and rheumatic diseases. She collaborated with scientific program staff to organize several scientific meetings as well as the annual NIAMS Forum for Clinical Mentored K Awardees.

Dr.Burrows began her career at NIH in 2003 as an American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Science and Technology Policy Fellow. In 2004, she joined National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) as a Scientific Program Specialist where she worked on a variety of policy, planning, reporting, and evaluation activities. She became the NHLBI legislative liaison in 2006 and, in 2009, completed a Brookings Institution legislative fellowship.

Dr. Burrows holds a bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology from Princeton University and a doctorate in Biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
