Research Progress Related to Scoliosis

The NIAMS continues to support research on scoliosis. Researchers focus on:

  • Mechanisms that facilitate straight spinal growth and why these fail in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.
  • Genetic risk factors for severe scoliosis.
  • Decision support tools for parents, children, and providers of children with scoliosis who are deciding whether to undergo spinal fusion.
  • Factors that facilitate proper brace usage, including remote compliance monitoring.
  • The use of innovative models to identify targets for prevention and new treatments.
