Summary

Shamima Islam, M.B.B.S., Ph.D., conducts basic and translational investigations in the field of immunology. She uses interdisciplinary approaches that combine and integrate molecular, cellular, and immunological levels of analysis. Her academic credentials include a Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology and a Bachelor’s in Medicine. Dr. Islam has designed, led, and managed projects to develop novel therapeutics for diseases such as arthritis, primary immune deficiency disease, and acute lung injury.

During her research tenure, she mentored graduate students and visiting scholars to help them understand scientific methodologies in molecular biology, immunology, and cell biology experiments with a contemporary approach to science. Dr. Islam built cross-functional collaborative relationships within the institution and with external scientific and medical communities. She understands the value of integrated research and translating the knowledge from the bench to the bedside. She is willing and able to learn, grow, and adapt to a new workplace environment and positively impact the organization’s goal.

Major areas of research:

  • Cellular signaling.
  • Vaccine study.
  • Diseases: Primary immunodeficiency diseases (X-Linked Agammaglobulinemia), arthritis, acute lung injury.
  • Drug development and gene therapy.
